The Himachal Government Transport (HGT) came into being in 1949.  On 2^nd October, 1974, Himachal Government Transport (HGT) was renamed as Transport Department. The Department is primarily a regulatory Department responsible for the enforcement/ implementation of Motor Vehicle Act/Rules

The Department of Transport is one of the departments in Himachal Pradesh where computerization has not only been introduced to a larger extent but also widely accepted by department officials as well as the people in the State.
