 Calendar of events for raising trout fingerlings into table size fish.

(I)            Get your raceways ready in all aspects in the month of April. In a tank of 15x2x1.5M, having a water flow of 12-15/ lps, 4000 fingerlings can be stocked. pH range of water should be between 6.7 to 7.5 and D.O., 8-10 Ppm. Temperature of water should not exceed 180C throughout the year.

 (II)          Stock your raceways with trout fingerlings in the end of May or in June. Start feeding them with standard start feed-1 @ 8% of body weight. At this stage juveniles should be fed 6-8 times a day. Finely crushed boiled eggs and goat liver can be given at intervals to add to vigor.

(III)         In rainy reason fish is susceptible to microbial attack so clean your raceways regularly (After 15 day intervals) and give regular rock salt baths to your stock.

(IV)        First grading can be done in the month of September or October, where larger ones can be separated from the non-identical ones. Feeding can be reduced to 5% of the body weight. Feeding can be further reduced to 2-3% in December and January depending upon temperature and acceptability of feed by the fish. Start feed –II and production feed can be used.

(V)         In the month of February-March 2nd grading can be done and the healthiest grown fingerlings are likely to gain a weight of above 200 g and will be available for marketing. Start sailing them. Feeding % from March onwards can be increased to 4% of the body weight. All the stock should be in marketable size in the month of June.

Calendar of events for Trout Fish Breeding.

1.   Segregate your brood stock in the month of August. Male and female brooders should be kept in separate tanks. Start feeding them 3-5% of body weight (3 times a day). The average weight of healthy brood stock should be between 1.0-2.5 kg;

2.    Supplementary diet in addition to brooder feed can be provided in the form of boiled eggs and goat liver. Give regular salt baths at the intervals of 15 days to rule out microbial infections.

3.    Stripping operations can be performed in the month of November- January depending upon ripening of gonads. After fertilization eggs should be laid in hatching trays. Dead eggs should be picked up regularly without disturbing live ones. Depending upon temperature eyed stage will be achieved in 22-35 days.

4.    After 12-15 days of eyed stage the eggs will hatch into elvins. Be very careful with this stage as it carries very delicate extra embryonic membrane, the yolk sac. No feeding is required at this stage;

5.    Slowly the yolk Sac will disappear and elvin will change into fry in 10-15 days. Start feeding the fry with egg yolk and finally crushed start feed –I, 8-10 times a day (8% of the body weight). This is a very sensitive stage as the juveniles are quite reluctant towards feed. This stage is generally achieved in the month of March. Some chemo attractant like fish oil can be mixed with the feed to attract the fry stage towards the feed.
